The answer is there is absolutely no problem with B-flat horn in relation to music in F. Most beginner methods present B-flat horn and F horn fingerings right there in the book and give both sets in the fingering chart. From the perspective of the students in a section where some players have single F and others single B-flat horns they just have different types of horns and they use somewhat different fingerings but they read from the same music and play at the same pitch level. In terms of comparing the two types of single horns, the example I like to give my students is to just play them back to back, single F and single B-flat. The main thing to notice hearing the two is that the single B-flat horn sounds considerably better. If you were to play them back-to-back you would note that the single B-flat is easier to play also. In short, there is no specific problem with fingerings or notations to overcome for the single B-flat horn. The player just uses the line of single B-flat horn fingerings, such as presented in my publication Introducing the Horn and pretty much every other introductory method out there for horn players.

While I have post some info about this topic in Horn Articles Online, one topic I have not yet posted on in this site specifically is the B-flat marching French horn. There is certainly confusion out there as to how this instrument might be used in groups, how it is notated, etc., as I frequently see it mentioned in the search terms in the site statistics. In short it is an alternate to the mellophone for marching groups that takes a horn mouthpiece and uses the fingerings of the B-flat side of a double horn (exactly the same fingerings as "thumb down" on a double horn! ). or can someone just tell me i can find is mellophone. The Boeger fingering chart is a good one. Your marching horn can be in F or Bb. If it is in F, the mellophone fingering chart should work. If in Bb, use this chart with the fingerings above the line. To find out which it is, play the first three notes of the star spangled banner with out using valves and check the last note on a tuner. The French horn is a brass instrument constructed primarily of one long coiled, conical tube, but it has a variety of different parts that can be used by the player to change the pitch and tone. At one end is the mouthpiece that the player blows into to force air through the horn. At the other end, the tube opens into the flared bell, into which the player inserts his or her hand while playing. The other main parts of a French horn are the valve levers, which are pressed to change the pitch of the notes being played. Woman posing The main body is one of the most noticeable parts of a French horn, and it is made up of a single long tube. The tube is typically around 12 feet (3. 6 m) long. It descends from the mouthpiece and then coils several times within a circular body before opening out into the bell at the other end. Another of the main parts of a French horn is the mouthpiece. This portion of the horn is slender and cone-shaped, and can come in different sizes to suit the note range the player wants to achieve.
